Location: State of Indiana (hybrid/remote with travel as needed)

IUSA advocates for policy and financial support that helps urban-based students succeed academically and socially, provides a forum for urban district leaders, and collaborates with educational partners to promote equity in public education. POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer and strategic leader of IUSA. This key role ensures the association advances its mission, provides high-impact advocacy on behalf of urban students, and strengthens partnerships with stakeholders across the education landscape. The Executive Director leads operations, legislative engagement, strategic planning, communications, and member services in alignment with Board priorities.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Serve as the CEO of IUSA, implementing Board-approved goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Facilitate development and execution of multi-year strategic plans with measurable outcomes.
  • Act as a non-voting, ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and contribute to governance discussions.

Advocacy & Policy

  • Serve as the principal spokesperson for IUSA on urban education issues.
  • Advocate IUSA positions at the Indiana General Assembly and with state agencies; register and testify as required.
  • Coordinate legislative priorities and research that informs policy advocacy and member updates.

Member Services & Relationship Management

  • Build, maintain, and deepen relationships with member district leaders, state policymakers, partner organizations, and key stakeholders.
  • Communicate regularly with members on legislative activity, policy trends, and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Convene meetings, workshops, and forums that support member needs and professional networking.

Organizational Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day operations including financial management, reporting, contract oversight, and compliance with bylaws and legal requirements.
  • Prepare for Board and membership meetings including drafting agendas and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain digital presence including website and social media platforms to promote IUSA priorities, accomplishments, and resources.

Financial Oversight

  • Manage financial activities including budget development, review of financial reports, and collaboration with external financial professionals (e.g., CPA for tax filings).
  • Seek funding opportunities, sponsorships, and strategic partnerships as directed by the Board.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Proven public education leadership experience.
  • Deep understanding of Indiana’s K-12 education policies, legislative processes, and urban school challenges.
  • Exceptional communicator with ability to represent IUSA publicly and build collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic planning and organizational management skills.
  • Ability to manage financial processes and work with external financial advisors.

Preferred

  • Experience with advocacy and lobbying at the state level.
  • Familiarity with communication platforms and digital engagement strategies.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Compensation and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Specific salary and benefits details will be determined by the Board of Directors.
